UniFi Controller Java 8 Shortcut Error and Device Discovery Problem Solutions

In the UniFi Controller software, which is used to manage all UniFi Access Point, UniFi Switch, and UniFi Security Gateway devices in the UniFi product group, native support for Java 8 (1.8) started to be provided as of versions 3.2.7 and 4.2.0. While there are generally no problems with newer software versions, although rarely, when attempting to run the application from its shortcut, you may encounter a “target not found” error, or the software may run but fail to list the devices on the network. In the continuation of our article, you can find solutions for these two different problems and other errors that may be encountered.

##Application Shortcut Error

The cause of the Application Shortcut error is generally that an older Java version (V1.7) is installed on your computer, or that both the old and new Java versions are installed at the same time.
To resolve these errors, first make sure that the Java application on your computer is updated to the latest version. Also, if multiple Java applications in different software versions are installed on your computer, remove all older versions and leave only the latest version of Java 8 (1.8) on your system.

##If You Still Continue to Receive the Shortcut Error After These Steps

  • Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties,
  • Change the Java location in the Target section as recommended below.

##The Original Target Section Looks Like This

C:\Windows\system32\javaw.exe -jar “C:\Users\kullanıcıadı\Ubiquiti UniFi\lib\ace.jar”

Change the Target Section to This

javaw.exe -jar “%USERPROFILE%\Ubiquiti UniFi\lib\ace.jar” ui

##If the Above Does Not Work, Try the Alternative Below

“%PROGRAMDATA%\Oracle\Java\javapath\javaw.exe” -jar “%USERPROFILE%\Ubiquiti UniFi\lib\ace.jar” ui

##Error Where Devices Cannot Be Found in the Software

If the software runs normally, but you experience an issue where the devices on your network cannot be found by the software, you can resolve this problem by configuring your computer’s firewall or the firewall-supported antivirus software you use on your computer to allow the UniFi application. Alternatively, you can temporarily disable Windows Firewall and your antivirus program with firewall features until the installation is completed.
Additionally, check whether there is a configuration such as Hotspot (Captive Portal) on the local network where your devices are located that blocks the ports used by the UniFi software. If such a situation exists, you can resolve this issue by defining exceptions for the MAC addresses of the computer on which the software is installed and the UniFi devices, or by temporarily disabling the Hotspot application.

##Software Continuously Stuck at the “Starting” Stage

If Turkish characters or an unsupported special character are used in the Windows account name on your computer, your software will remain continuously stuck at the “Starting” stage, as shown in the example above. To resolve the issue, uninstall the software from your computer, create a new Windows account that does not contain Turkish letters or special characters, log in with the newly created Windows account, and reinstall the program.
